Walk off homer downs the Padres and rookie SS Cabrera is injured…..

Monday, April 20th, 2009

Oh well ! For the first 5 innings things were looking great in Padres land, then SS Everth Cabrera sustains a wrist injury in the top of the 6th inning. In that same top half inning, the Padres stranded two men on base and in the bottom half of the inning SS replacement Luis Rodriguez made an error which opened the doors for the Phillies. The Padres bullpen could not hold the lead in the bottom of the 9th inning and the Phillies eventually won the game by the score of 5 – 4.

So much on the negative stuff, let’s digest on the positive aspects of the game. A damn good performance by Padres P Josh Greer, considering the ballpark and Greer’s spring training performance which indicates you can never lean on the statistics during spring training. Once again, Greer proves his ability to come up to the big show and perform quite well. If you take a step back and analyze the current Padres starting pitchers, it is becoming quite clear the Padres have alot of options. For instance, at the moment Walter Silva and Cha Seung Baek are on the disabled list. Down on the farm you have Josh Greer and Chad Gaudin, on the mend there is Mark Pryor. This quick assessment does not even include those prospects such as Wade LeBlanc, Nick Schmidt, Cesar Carrillo, Cesar Ramos, and Matt Buschmann.

It’s time for Padres GM Kevin Towers to work his mojo again to rectify the problem at shortstop with the injury to Everth Cabrera. What is the impact of Cabrera’s injury ? First of all, we lost ‘speed’ on the team as Cabrera was definitely a threat on the field and bases as well. Secondly, Cabrera had earned significant playing time and was becoming a major instrument in the team. Thirdly, Cabrera’s injury now has Towers looking outside for some help at the most crucial position. Question is, do the Padres attempt to acquire a stop gap player or one with upside potential. Ah yes ! You know where I am going with this. How about making a trade for Phillies prospect SS Jason Donald. The Padres have leverage in pitching and outfield in the minors, why not pull the trigger and try to get Donald. When Cabrera returns in mid-season, now the Padres have more leverage when the trading deadline nears in July. The key is to collect assets that can be further package perhaps for huge deals later in the season.

Player of the Game
This goes to Phillies LF Raul Ibanez, who had the walk off homer in the bottom of the 9th inning that won the game for the Phillies. I have been very impressed with Ibanez since Raul’s days back with the Mariners. Ibanez has always been consistent and steady at the dish as well in the outfield. The only reason Ibanez was not well known is the fact he was situated in the Great Northwest and on a losing franchise. But within the baseball community, Ibanez has been well known and is a great addition to the Philadelphia Phillies. I am damn sure the Philly fans will appreciate the hard work Ibanez brings to the park every night.

Come on Padres let’s get back on track and start a new winning streak. To conclude this post, here’s Ex-NBA player and musician Wayman Tisdale with a song titled ‘Let’s Do It Again’.

Last fling in Peoria on Getaway day……

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009

Today’s game with the Seattle Mariners is the final one for Spring Training 2009 in Peoria, as the Padres took a beating. Padres Chris Young did his best impression of Cha Seung Baek, by giving up 9 runs in 3 2/3 innings. Historically, Young never fares well in the Arizona training camp and I wouldn’t worry about Young’s performance. Eulogio De La Cruz was hammered for 5 runs in 1 1/3 innings and let’s hope this does not become a consistent pattern.

It was reported yesterday that team prankster Brian Giles had driven a bus to the ballpark and gave a few players a ride around the field. I guess Giles and few other players were ready to break from camp and head to San Diego. Since, we are speaking about pranks, here is a video on baseball pranks.

As the players, coaches, front office and team’s equipment makes that trek across the desert back to San Diego. Here’s one darn good song by the Doobie Brothers, titled ‘Long Train Runnin’. Hey Padres Fans, the boys will be in San Diego on Friday against the Halos.

If Spring Training Statistics were to be taken seriously…..

Wednesday, March 25th, 2009

People employed by the baseball industry for the most part, do not take the statistics produced during Spring Training very seriously. As they look for other things, like if the player is experiencing with a new pitch or just getting a few swings in. Though, I would have to admit, if statistics were taken seriously Cha Seung Baek would not make the staff, Chad Huffman and Kyle Blanks would be on the major league roster. Baek, in my most humble opinion needs to impress the Padres Front Office and so far I haven’t seen anything impressive with Baek, other than an ERA that ranks up there with a few good companies with P/E ratios of 10+ on New York Stock Exchange. The case with Huffman and Blanks, both have done nothing but solidified there stance on becoming a member of the major league roster. The Padres could easily trade Giles, Kouzmanoff, Peavy, and Adrian Gonzalez to get a bundle of players in return. The fundamental question is, do the Padres really have the guts to make a bold move ?

If I were the Padres GM, this what I would try to do. Keep in mind, I am creating these scenario’s with no fundamental backing from other sources. I would try to pull off two trades before the team breaks from camp. Here are those trade proposals:

(1) I would send Kouzmanoff to Houston, for Astros pitching prospects Samuel Gervacio and Felipe Paulino.
(2) I would send Brian Giles to Oakland, for A’s pitching prospect Jeff Gray. Gray is a hard-throwing reliever who led all A’s minor leaguers with 15 saves in 2007.

With those two moves, I have solidified the bullpen with Gray and Gervacio, added a potential starter with Paulino after the all-star break. In addition, moving Headley to 3rd base, allows either Huffman or Blanks to play in left field and Scott Hairston or Wil Venable in right field.

Obviously, by the performance of the Padres pitching there should be no questions asked as what to do. With that being said, here’s a tune by Stevie Ray Vaughan and Albert King, titled ‘Ask Me No Questions’

No more Baek, get some help now….

Saturday, March 21st, 2009

Just recently, Padres’ GM Kevin Towers was quoted that he was feeling good about the starting rotation and was more concerned with the bullpen. Based on the performance of the 3rd through 5th slot in the rotation during spring training, I have to disagree with Kevin. Let me put this in simple terms with the following question. Who would think a pitcher that has been cut from the 2nd worst team in the league can become your 3rd starter on another team ? I am not a professional scout nor do I claim to be one. But, I did play baseball for a number of years (14 yrs) with some outstanding players and competition. Cha Seung Baek is not a starting pitcher on any other club besides the Padres. I was not impressed with Baek’s performance last year and honestly speaking it’s time the Padres move on forward. You can only fool the public for so long, eventually it will catch up with you. I know this organization is on a payroll cut, so let’s cut the deadwood now and let the kids bring it on. The Braves did so back in the late 1980′s with Glavine and Smoltz, as both players took their licks. Give the Ramos, Silva, and Ryu a shot at the 4th/5th slots, move Correia to the 3rd slot. It’s one thing to acquire players from successful organizations, and another thing to acquire players from unsuccessful organizations.

In another area that concerns me, is the Padres losing record in Spring Training. I know it’s just spring, but you want to get that mindset of winning some ballgames. For the last two years, this franchise has gotten off to a slow start during the regular season. They can not afford to get off to a slow start this season, the mentality to win from the onset must be there. The sense of urgency, that no one can take the games you won in April away must be instilled.

Are you telling me the rotation will be the same, here’s a tune by Justin Timberlake featuring Snoop Dog, titled ‘Signs’

Mexico’s Adrian Gonzalez caliente !….

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009

Ah ! Facing elimination in their home country, team Mexico defeated the South African team by the score of 14-3. Leading the assault was Padres’ 1B Adrian Gonzalez, who hit TWO home runs and driven in SIX. Adrian along with Jorge Cantu and Oscar Robles, each had THREE hits a piece. Overall, Mexico had 16 hits and did a complete face about from the previous night when they had been slaughtered by Australia. Mexico next game is on Wednesday and awaits to face the loser between Australia and Cuba.

Back to the states where the Padres had the day off. Though just recently Baseball America had rated the Padres Farm system 29th of out 30 which I find highly amusing. Just to show you, the folks at Baseball America are more in line with many brokers today. Most of their analysis is all based on speculation and with the injuries (Carrillo and Schmidt) that may had an impact on the scoring for the folks at Baseball America. Needless to say, Alderson and his gang has tremendously upgraded the farm system that should be given some consideration in the overall scoring.  Another article was published in the Union Tribune, stating Padres Pitcher Cha Seung Baek is not a 3rd pitcher on a 5th man starting rotation based on scouts throughout the league. So far to date, including to last season, Baek has been inconsistent and at times shown he belongs on the starting staff. Other times, Baek is just horrible. All I can say is, if the Mariners were the 2nd worst team in the majors last year and Baek couldn’t pitch for them. Doesn’t that say something ? Well, the Padres were the 3rd worst team last year, so I guess Baek for the Padres is like picking up a gold junior mining company for an novice investor. Mind you, the gold junior mining company has lost 70% of its value though has “POTENTIAL” for a rebound. Ahhh, that word again Speculation !

Anyhow, here’s a song from Santana…..Oye Como Va !
